The vessels are indexed and classified as to rate; entries include dimensions, dates when built, and other information. The list was begun on January 1, 1844 and includes corrections through June 1, 1858. The first fly-leaf was autographed by Captain Patrick John Blake.

Richard Howe, Earl Howe, was born in London, England, on March 19, 1726, the son of Emanuel Scrope Howe (1699-1735) and Mary Sophia Charlotte von Kielmansegg (1703-1782).
